Senior Software Architect, Strategic R&D
Shape the software architecture behind next-generation autonomous robotic systems. Bridge research and product engineering to turn complex ideas into scalable, secure, product-ready capabilities.
Shape the future of autonomous defence technology
At Milrem Robotics, we're building autonomous systems that operate in some of the world's most demanding environments. As our Strategic R&D programs mature, we're looking for a Senior Software Architect to help turn breakthrough research into scalable, product-ready software.
This is a strategic technical leadership role sitting at the intersection of Strategic R&D, Product Engineering, and Product Management. You'll help shape the architectural direction for future software capabilities while ensuring that today's research can become tomorrow's products.
You'll work across multiple strategic programs, including international defence and research initiatives, helping shape software for autonomy, multi-vehicle systems, communications, and control systems.
What you'll do
Define and evolve the software architecture roadmap for Strategic R&D.
Bridge research, product engineering, and product management to ensure architectural decisions support long-term product development.
Shape the software architecture for autonomy, control systems, and distributed multi-vehicle capabilities within Strategic R&D.
Guide the transition from research concepts and prototypes into secure, scalable, maintainable software foundations.
Promote architectural consistency, reuse, and engineering best practices across teams and Strategic R&D programs.
Facilitate and communicate critical architectural decisions, balancing technical excellence with practical delivery.
Identify technical risks early and help engineering teams navigate complex architectural challenges.
Influence technical direction across multiple teams through collaboration rather than formal authority.
What we're looking for
We're looking for someone who combines deep software architecture expertise with the ability to bring people together around a shared technical direction.
You'll likely bring:
Extensive experience designing software architecture for complex distributed systems.
Experience as a Software Architect, Principal Engineer, Lead Engineer, or similar senior technical role.
A proven track record of driving architectural adoption across multiple teams or programs, not just designing architecture.
Experience balancing scalability, security, reliability, maintainability, and performance in long-lived software systems.
Strong stakeholder management skills and the ability to influence technical decisions across different engineering disciplines.
The ability to remain hands-on when needed while operating strategically.
Experience in one or more of the following areas would be particularly valuable:
Autonomy systems
Robotics
Control systems
Multi-agent or multi-vehicle systems
Distributed software systems
Defence, safety-critical, or mission-critical environments
Taking research or prototype software into production
Why this role is different
This isn't a traditional software architect position.
You'll help shape the software foundations behind Milrem's next generation of autonomous capabilities, working closely with researchers, software engineers, systems engineers, and product leaders.
Success won't be measured by documentation alone. You'll be expected to create alignment, influence technical direction, and help architecture become reality across multiple teams and strategic programs.
If you enjoy solving complex technical challenges, building consensus across engineering organisations, and shaping software that moves from research into real-world capability, we'd like to hear from you.
